FPI inflow continues in Dec; equities corner Rs 11,119-cr investment

Foreign investors pumped in Rs 11,119 crore in the Indian equities in December, making it the second consecutive monthly inflow, despite increasing concerns over the re-emergence of Covid-19 cases in some parts of the world. However, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned cautious in recent days. The inflow in December was much lower compared to Rs 36,239 crore invested by FPIs in the month of November, data with the depositories showed. "Despite correction in the markets, increasing concerns over re-emergence of Covid in some parts of the world and recession worries in the US. FPIs remained net buyers in the Indian equity markets (in December)," Himanshu Srivastava, Associate Director - Manager Research, Morningstar India, said. Also, in the midst of the ongoing uncertainty, many investors would have also chosen to book profits with Indian markets touching all-time high recently. IEX gets shareholders' nod to buy back shares worth up to Rs 98 crore

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) has got shareholders' approval through postal ballot to buy back shares worth up to Rs 98 crore. The proposal to buy back shares worth up to Rs 98 crore approved by requisite majority through postal ballot, showed a BSE filing. The board of directors in its meeting on November 25 had approved the cash offer for buyback of equity shares of face value of Rs 1 each at a maximum price of Rs 200 per share for an aggregate amount up to Rs 98 crore. The IEX had listed a special resolution -- approval for the buyback of equity shares in the postal ballot notice. The indicative maximum number of equity shares at the buyback price would be 49,00,000. The buyback is being undertaken after taking into account the operational and strategic cash requirements of the company in medium term and for returning surplus funds to the members in an effective and efficient manner, it explained.

Capital markets regulator Sebi on Wednesday levied a fine totalling Rs 75 lakh on Indian Clearing Corp Ltd (ICCL) and NSE Clearing Corp Ltd (NCL) for violating norms in the matter of Karvy Stock Broking Ltd (KSBL). In two separate orders, the regulator slapped a fine of Rs 50 lakh on ICCL and Rs 25 lakh on NSE Clearing Corporation. The order came after market watchdog initiated adjudication proceedings against ICCL and NSE Clearing Corp for alleged violation of provisions of Sebi's early warning mechanism (EWM) circular issued on December, 2018. SAT sets aside Sebi's order to impose penalty on Bhushan Steel for lapses

The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has set aside a Sebi's order to impose a Rs 2 lakh penalty on Bhushan Steel Ltd, now known as Tata Steel BSL Ltd, for disclosure lapses. Bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against the debt-laden Bhushan Steel Ltd in July 2017. After completing the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP), Bhushan Steel was taken over by Tata Steel Ltd in 2018. "The impugned order dated 14 February 2022, cannot be sustained and is quashed. However, it would be open to the respondent Sebi to issue a show cause notice for the alleged violation against the entity," SAT said in an order passed on December 20. Sebi on Monday barred Capproin Financial Advisory Services (CFAS) and its partners from the securities markets for three years for providing investment advisory services without the market regulator's authorisation. Capproin Financial Advisory Services is a partnership firm and its partners -- Sourabh Rai and Jasmeet Kaur Bagga. The order came after Sebi received complaints through the market watchdog's SCORES (SEBI Complaints Redress System portal) platform against CFAS and its partners. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried allowed $250 million bond, house arrest

The cryptocurrency entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried can post USD 250 million bond and live in his parents' home in California while he awaits trial on charges that he swindled investors and looted customer deposits on his FTX trading platform, a judge said on Thursday. Assistant US Attorney Nicolas Roos said in US District Court in Manhattan that Bankman-Fried, 30, perpetrated a fraud of epic proportions. Capital markets regulator Sebi on Friday said it has initiated a detailed study of fees and expenses charged by mutual funds. The study would endeavour to provide data as input for policy formulations, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a statement. The policies would seek to balance the need for facilitating financial inclusion, encouraging new participants, leveraging economies of scale, encouraging adoption of technology, discouraging cross subsidisation across schemes, closing arbitrage opportunities if any, and curbing malpractices if any. FTX crypto exchange founder agrees to extradition to US, says attorney

Sam Bankman-Fried may be ready to come to the US to face criminal charges related to the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX following a chaotic court appearance in the Bahamas. A lawyer for Bankman-Fried was quoted as saying Monday the disgraced FTX founder has agreed to be extradited to the United States. A court hearing was stopped earlier in the day when his attorneys said it was premature for him to stand before the court. Jerone Roberts, a local defense attorney for Bankman-Fried, told The New York Times that lawyers will prepare the necessary documents for extradition. Mr. Bankman-Fried wishes to put the customers right, and that is what has driven his decision, the Times quoted Roberts telling reporters. It was not immediately clear when extradition could occur. ED attaches Rs 907 crore worth assets of crypto exchanges under PMLA

The Enforcement Directorate has attached proceeds of crime worth Rs 907 crore and arrested three persons in cases related to money laundering by crypto exchanges, Parliament was informed on Monday. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said Central GST officers have detected Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion worth Rs 87.60 crore by 12 crypto exchanges. Recovery of Rs 110.97 crore, including interest and penalty, has been made. The minister said further investigation is under process in eight cases and four cases are closed on payment of tax along with interest and penalty. Further, in case of crypto exchange Zanmai Labs Pvt Ltd, known as WazirX, assets worth Rs 289.68 crore have been seized from the exchange and its Directors for violation of the provisions of the foreign exchange management act (FEMA), Chaudhary said. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, the minister said the Directorate of Enforcement is investigating several cases related to crypto .

FPIs turn net buyers in November, invest Rs 36,329 cr in equities

After pulling out money from Indian equities market in the past two months, FPIs made a strong come back in November with a net investment of Rs 36,329 crore on weakening of the US dollar index and positivity about overall macroeconomic trends. This was the third month (July, August and November) in this year when FPIs witnessed net inflows. Moreover, they started the month of December on a positive note. Going forward, flow trajectory is expected to remain positive in December. However, some shift could be seen from expensive stocks to value stocks, Anita Gandhi, Whole Time Director and Head Institutional Business at Arihant Capital, said. Eight of the top-10 most valued firms together added Rs 1,15,837 crore in market valuation last week, with Reliance Industries emerging as the biggest gainer. From the top-10 pack, HDFC twins were the only laggards. Last week, the BSE benchmark jumped 574.86 points or 0.92 per cent. The benchmark had settled above 63,000-level for the first time ever on Wednesday. The market valuation of Reliance Industries jumped Rs 71,462.28 crore to Rs 18,41,994.48 crore. Hindustan Unilever's market capitalisation (mcap) gained Rs 18,491.28 crore to Rs 6,14,488.60 crore. Global investors bullish on Indian equities market despite 86% premium: USB

Swiss brokerage UBS Securities said global investors are bullish on Indian equities market in spite of the 86 per cent premium it commands over emerging market peers and on the back of a 17 per cent outperformance so far this year. "India is one of only three markets to trade at a premium to its own history, (the other two being Thailand and the UAE)" despite it commanding an 86 per cent premium over its emerging markets peers, according to UBS Securities. In spite of the expensive valuations, most equity investors are quite optimistic, both from a cyclical and a structural perspective even though they see the economy losing the steam and printing in a 6.9 per cent growth this fiscal and a much lower 5.5 per cent next fiscal before settling at the long-run average of 6 per cent in FY25, UBS Securities said in a note on Tuesday. On Monday, its Wall Street rival Morgan Stanley said the Sensex would continue to outperform in 2023 with an average 10 per cent rally taking the benchmark .

Global investment firm Blackstone-sponsored Nexus Select Trust filed the draft paper with market regulator SEBI on Thursday to launch India's first public issue of retail REIT to raise around USD 500 million, sources said. Nexus Select Trust has a portfolio of 17 operational shopping malls across 14 major cities, covering about 10 million square feet area valued around USD 3 billion. The initial share sale of Inox Green Energy got subscribed 46 per cent on the first day of subscription on Friday. The Initial Public Offering (IPO) received bids for 3.05 crore shares against 6.67 crore shares on offer, according to NSE data. Kaynes Technology India Limited (KTIL) on Wednesday said it has collected Rs 257 crore from anchor investors ahead of its initial share sale that opens for public subscription on Thursday. Gold prices rise by Rs 51 to Rs 50,964; silver drops Rs 502 per kg

Gold price in the national capital gained Rs 51 to Rs 50,964 per 10 grams on Wednesday amid weak rupee, according to HDFC Securities. In the previous trade, the gold had touched Rs 50,913 per 10 grams. Silver, however, dropped Rs 502 to Rs 59,265 per kilogram. The rupee depreciated 12 paise to 82.71 against the US dollar in morning trade on Wednesday amid a muted trend in domestic equities. In the international market, gold was quoting lower at Rs 1,653 per ounce while silver was down at USD 19.70 per ounce. "COMEX gold has been steady around USD 1,650 an ounce as traders focused on the US Federal Reserve meeting later tonight for clues on when the bank will start scaling back interest rate hikes," said Dilip Parmar, Research Analyst at HDFC Securities.

Markets regulator Sebi has slapped a penalty totalling Rs 59 lakh on nine persons in a case pertaining to alleged fraudulent scheme of misrepresenting financial statements of Bombay Dyeing and Manufacturing Company Limited. These persons were either members of the audit committee of Bombay Dyeing or CFOs of the company during the violations. They have been asked to pay the fine within 45 days, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in its order passed on Monday. The regulator conducted an investigation to ascertain whether the books of accounts of Bombay Dyeing and Manufacturing Company Limited (BDMCL) were manipulated for the financial years from FY12 to FY19. The investigation revealed that BDMCL, by entering into various Memoranda of Understanding with its group company Scal Services Limited during FY12 to FY18 and by subsequently recognising revenue on the basis of such MoUs and not consolidating the transactions carried out with Scal, had inflated its sales and

Fusion Ltd plans to raise about Rs 600 crore by issuing fresh equity shares

Microfinance company Fusion Limited is planning to raise around Rs 600 crore through fresh issuance of equity shares in its initial public offering (IPO), a top official said on Saturday. The initial share sale will open for public subscription on November 2 and conclude on November 4. The company has fixed a price band of Rs 350-368 a share, its MD and CEO Devesh Sachdev said at a press conference. The IPO comprises fresh issuance of equity shares worth Rs 600 crore and an offer of sale of 1,36,95,466 equity shares by promoters and existing shareholders. The company is expected to raise Rs 1,104 crore at the upper end of the price band.
